Harry Styles | Sony
We help make the impossible possible as singer Harry Styles takes to the Scottish skies for his highly-anticipated music video to his debut solo single, ‘Sign of the Times’.
A 65-person crew, including dive teams and water safety experts, multiple locations and complex technical logistics; LS Productions made it happen.
Suspend Harry Styles from a helicopter and fly him through a variety of landscapes? No problem. The visually striking film captures the singer traversing otherworldly scenery - cascading waterfalls, endless forests, and misty mountain-tops – before reaching a stunning crescendo where he is silhouetted against burning bright sunset clouds.
Working closely with the artist’s record label, Sony, and management team, Full Stop Management, LS secured the safety dream team to make this shoot happen. Will Banks, owner and pilot of GB Helicopters, and stunt-safety expert, David Pearce – both of whom we had worked with previously on Bear Grylls shoots. Immensely skilled and trusted regularly with the lives of A-List stars from Barack Obama to Kate Winslet for Bear Grylls, they ended up flying Harry 1500 ft above sea level, above the mountains themselves. The results are truly spectacular.
“It was a great opportunity to work on a technically difficult piece with a great team. Even with the short timeline afforded, the LS team had everything scheduled to the last detail without a hitch.”
OWNER AND CHIEF PILOT OF GB HELICOPTERS
Due to the high-profile nature of the artist, security and privacy were a key consideration for the team, and the location and shoot were kept as low-key as possible. We were tasked with proposing workable epic locations that were UK based and within reasonable travel distance from London. The team scouted the whole of Skye and settled on its east coast – the most iconic part of the island.
The 65-person crew - including dive teams and water safety experts - was spread across multiple areas. We used our solid relationships with the locals to assist and look after the teams over the three-day shoot. Our team rose to the complex technical and logistical challenges of finding locations with stunning landscapes that also allowed a helicopter to rappel Styles, who completed most of the stunts himself, flying around Old Man of Storr, Loch Storr, around a forest, and cliffs by Kilt Rock.
“LS are quite simply the best; they're always one step ahead and ease the pressures on a dedicated crew.”
“Like many episodes and risky events I've done over 30 years, I still feel the weight of responsibility on my shoulders when engaging in the type of action we'd planned for this video,” explains Safety Co-ordinator, Dave Pearce. “Further to this, coordinating safety, multiple helicopters and a production of many moving parts in a difficult location with dynamic weather systems is a tall challenge. This burden of responsibility was greatly eased by the utter professionalism, dedication, attention to detail and humour of my team and particularly LS Productions."
Will Banks, owner and chief pilot of GB Helicopters, adds: “The project ran smoothly, even in very challenging weather conditions, and Harry was faultless in his drive to achieve the shot, with nerves of steel to be prepared to hang from a helicopter over 1500’ in the air. Other artists have been defeated by the scale of Skye, but Harry conquered it without flinching!”
